Distance Technologies raises $2.7M for advanced glasses-free software

Distance Technologies has emerged from obscurity as a pioneering developer of glasses-free Extended Reality (XR) software for the automotive, aerospace, and defense markets.

Its goal is to empower users with dynamic AI. Already showing its first commercials, Distance Technologies’ interface transforms any visual interface into a window for virtual reality. This technology comes from the makers of the Varjo XR headphones.

Using computer-generated 3D light that seamlessly blends with the real world, Distance provides pixel-perfect depth that covers the entire field of view for maximum immersion — and doesn’t rely on anything worn on the user’s face or body, the company said.

Building on Varjo’s pioneering promise of “meeting the human eye” for XR, Helsinki, Finland-based Distance Technologies moves to the next generation of fidelity and 3D performance in the world of users for the first time.

This practice was particularly compelling for headsets in the automotive and military markets. With Distance, just look out the window or at any viewing point in your car or plane – and experience the next generation of mixed reality.

The content of this group looks natural, thanks to the depth of the Distance per pixel. All this is possible without a headset, phone, pin, device or glasses – through your eyes and without your eyes.

“There are very few times in your life when you have the opportunity to ‘strip lightning.’ I had the opportunity to do this once as the founder of Varjo and the first XR headset to select a person with eyes and now I am happy to have the opportunity to do it again with the Distance platform – and maybe in an even bigger way,” said Urho Konttori, CEO and cofounder of Distance Technologies, m ‘his words. “I firmly believe that we are creating a communication system where mixed reality without headphones or glasses is everywhere and that virtual AI can reach everyone in the world.”

Designed to be integrated into automotive and high-performance systems, this technology demonstrator is currently being evaluated by several leading OEMs for use in windows and doors.

Meanwhile, defense contractors and aviation companies can look to the implementation of Distance technology in military and military vehicles, in anticipation of significant improvements. Future generations of the design are expected to open up additional market opportunities.

For a long time as the “Holy Grail” of the XR industry, the mirrorless XR means that any display inside the window, windshield or cockpit can now be filled with ANY THINGS, data or alphanumeric characters.

The content of this XR can combine different temporal analysis with unique and specific knowledge of the location or geospatial coordinate – all visible naturally and “in situ.”

The surface technology is designed to be compatible with several types of AI languages and search engines as a way to create true “Contextual AI” and represent the next generation of XR accessible to a wide audience.

“This team is incredibly talented, and their timing couldn’t be better as the car and pedestrian scene is resurgent. Distance Racing is already amazing, and we have 100% confidence in their ability to change the XR industry with their cutting-edge technology. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before, and we’re happy to support their journey to new heights,” said Ilkka Kivimäki, founding partner at Maki.vc, in a statement.

“We are honored to lead the first investment of Distance Technologies. We have built a strong relationship with this group and we like to bring back experienced founders as quickly as possible. Distance’s vision fits well with our broader vision for the next generation of computing, where digital seamlessly connects with the world, “said Petri Rajahalme, founding partner at FOV Ventures, in a statement.

Distance has raised $2.7 million in a seed round led by FOV Ventures and Maki.vc, with additional funding from Business Finland and David Helgason’s Foobar.vc. More information about the availability of Distance customers glasses without the XR solution will be released in 2024.
